Tooth-Colored Fillings

Advances in modern dentistry have benefited patients and dentists alike. Perhaps one of our favorites is tooth-colored fillings.

Although the American Dental Association (ADA) deems dental amalgam safe for patients, some patients find silver amalgam fillings unappealing. Cowley Dental Care and our patients prefer the comfort, appearance, and longevity of tooth-colored composite resin fillings, also known as white or composite resin fillings.

What Is a White Composite Resin Filling?

A tooth-colored composite resin filling is made from a mixture of resins and colorants to simulate the shade and translucence of natural teeth. Composite resin fillings are most commonly used to strengthen and protect decayed, brittle, or damaged teeth.

Whether you have tooth decay or a tooth that has been weakened from a root canal, a white composite resin filling can restore your tooth’s appearance and function. Tooth-colored fillings are a very popular dental treatment for people of all ages, as they are effective and attractive restorations.

Why Choose a Tooth-Colored Composite Resin Filling?

Our patients love tooth-colored fillings because they are safe, reliable, and long-lasting. Here are some of the reasons why you may want to consider white composite resin fillings:

  • Tooth-colored fillings match the natural shade of your teeth, so they are not visible in the mouth when you laugh, speak, or smile.
  • White composite resin fillings are biocompatible, meaning they are safe for living tissue.
  • Unlike amalgam fillings, composite resin bonds directly to the tooth and requires less removal of healthy tooth structure
  • Composite resin fillings are less likely to change shape due to temperature changes than amalgam fillings.
  • Composite resins can also be used to reshape chipped teeth or to close small gaps in a patient’s smile.
  • Tooth-colored fillings are attractive and effective alternatives to silver fillings as they seamlessly repair a patient's smile.

How Is a Composite Resin Filling Placed?

A composite resin filling typically takes only one dental visit, during which the tooth is prepared for the filling and fully restored.

Before we place the composite resin filling, we numb the area and remove decay and bacteria from the tooth. We then etch the tooth’s remaining structure so the bond can directly adhere to the tooth and provide stability. Our dentists customize the composite resin to match the shade of the natural teeth and applies it in layers, curing each layer with a UV light.

Once the tooth is rebuilt, it is shaped and contoured to look natural and equalize the patient's bite. Finally, the repaired tooth is polished, resulting in a smooth and refreshed smile.

White fillings may need replacement if tooth enamel wears down or gums recede. Regular dental checkups are essential because this allows our dentists to address any issues before they progress and require further treatment.
