Preventive Dental Care

Everyone wants to have a healthy, disease-free smile. Cowley Dental Care offers exceptional preventive dentistry to help patients attain smiles they can enjoy for a lifetime.

Preventive dental care can help reduce the risk for certain illnesses, and it can also help achieve and maintain excellent oral health. For instance, dental sealants can prevent 80 percent of cavities in children!

We want you to have a smile that makes you look and feel great, and preventive dentistry helps us support you in this goal. Our preventive care strengthens teeth, protects smiles against cavities, prevents plaque buildup, and freshens breath.

Preventive Dental Exams and Cleanings

We recommend twice-yearly oral exams and teeth cleanings to maintain healthy teeth and gums. During these regularly scheduled appointments, your dentist and one of our skilled dental hygienists will do the following:

  • Visual inspection of your teeth, gums, oral tissues, and jaws
  • Evaluate the health of your teeth and gums
  • Take digital dental and/or panoramic x-rays, if needed
  • Remove plaque and tartar from teeth
  • Apply fluoride or sealants, if needed
  • Screen for oral cancer

Our thorough dental exams and cleanings allow us to check your oral health, monitor any underlying or apparent issues, discuss your concerns and goals, and more. Usually, new patients will receive a cleaning during their first appointment unless there are more pressing issues to address, such as gum disease or a broken filling.

If the cleaning is not completed on the first visit, we will schedule your cleaning for a time that works best for you. Either the dentist or dental hygienist will perform cleanings, depending on your needs. We will teach you how to prevent cavities at home through brushing and flossing. We will also discuss other oral health habits you can practice to keep your teeth clean and gums disease-free.

We Strive to Deliver Exceptional Service

At Cowley Dental Care, every patient has peace of mind knowing they will see the same dedicated dental team each time they visit. Our dentists take the time to speak with each patient to learn about their oral health needs, concerns, and goals so we can give you the personalized treatment each patient deserves. Every patient is the most important person in our dental office, and we will always do what we can to make sure each patient is comfortable, safe, and happy in our care.

Frequently Asked Questions

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), regular dental cleanings and exams are essential for optimal oral health. The frequency of cleanings and exams depends on each patient’s unique oral health needs, but many patients visit twice each year.

Why Dental Cleanings and Exams Are Important

Many patients do not realize that brushing and flossing alone cannot remove all plaque and tartar. Only a dentist or dental hygienist can successfully remove plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth, around the gumline, and between your teeth. Not only do regular professional cleanings and exams ensure your teeth and gums are in great condition, but you’ll also leave our dental office with a fresher smile.

What to Expect During a Dental Check-up

Regular check-ups allow your Metairie dentist to provide necessary preventive care of your teeth and gums. During your check-ups, our dental team takes x-rays of your mouth to ensure everything is healthy and functional. X-rays also help us see any underlying issues, such as hidden cavities or impacted wisdom teeth, so we can take the necessary steps to ensure your oral health is protected.

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, occurs when the gums are inflamed and infected. Though common among adults, gum disease is a serious condition that can impact your health and wellbeing. As gum disease progresses, a patient may experience bone and tooth loss. Gum disease has also been linked to heart and lung diseases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Fortunately, gum disease can be controlled and prevented through excellent oral hygiene and reducing certain health risks, such as quitting smoking. Cowley Dental Care can help protect your gum health through preventive periodontal care.

Common Symptoms of Gum Disease

If you experience any of the following symptoms, please contact us to schedule a dental checkup:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Swollen or puffy gums
  • Bright red gums
  • Tender or sore gums
  • Tooth pain and sensitivity
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Receding gums
  • Loose teeth

Gum Disease Treatment in Metairie, Louisiana

Gum disease can be treated through consistent dental care and periodontal therapy, including a deep cleaning called scaling and root planing. This method of cleaning allows the dentist to remove plaque and tartar hidden below the gumline.

Scaling and root planing prevents damage to surrounding bone and control the infection and inflammation.

Most people know that regularly brushing and flossing your teeth is essential for maintaining excellent oral health. However, some of our patients are unsure of what kind of toothpaste to use and what the best kind may be for their smile.

Fluoride Toothpaste Protects Smiles

Drs. Cowley and Dr. Roth believe that the best kind of toothpaste to use is one that contains fluoride. Fluoride strengthens the teeth and helps prevent cavities, and it is highly recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA).

Toothpastes with the ADA Seal of Acceptance contain fluoride, and these toothpastes can also contain other ingredients that improve oral health or lessen certain conditions.

There are seemingly countless toothpastes from which you can choose. There are specialty toothpastes for those who experience tooth sensitivity, and some also help reduce gingivitis and tartar buildup, prevent enamel erosion, and improve bad breath.

Whitening toothpastes are quite popular, but we discourage using them because they are often more abrasive on the teeth than regular toothpaste.

Teeth Cleanings and Exams in Metairie, LA

As long as your toothpaste contains fluoride, is ADA-approved, and is approved by your dentist, your smile can remain healthy, bright, and cavity-free for many years to come. It's also essential that you visit your dentist regularly for dental cleanings and exams.

If you are unsure which toothpaste you should use, just ask one of our dentists and they will recommend something safe and effective that meets your needs.
